XBMC Plugins Unofficial Repositories

There are several ways to extend XBMC’s functionality with new plugins and addons, not present on the official XBMC repositories. You can install XBMC plugins individualy, add thirdy-party XBMC repositories or install a single addon to manage unofficial XBMC repositories. This is possible because XBMC repositories are addons themselves. Brilliant, right? All it takes for you to get a complete new set of XBMC plugins and addons, is telling the XBMC Addons Manager where the files are. The installation process is common to all XBMC types of addons: repositories, skins, plugins, scripts, web interfaces, etc.

A single XBMC plugin to rule them all

Temhil, a XBMC user and skilled coder wrote a plugin to install and manage unofficial XBMC addon repositories. It’s called Repositories Installer and is the preferred way to install and manage unofficial XBMC plugins. Once it is installed, you can browse and install other repositories right from XBMC Addons Manager. Follow the instructions below to install it as if it was any other XBMC plugin.

  1. Download the ZIP file for the XBMC repository you wish to add into your system. Save it to a location accessible by XBMC Addons Manager. For Linux users, this should be home folder. To Windows users, Documents, Downloads, Desktop or something like that should be fine. For Apple TV2 users, private/var/mobile/ should work just fine. I’m not familiar with other systems folder structure, sorry.
  2. Start XBMC and go to System >> Add-ons >> Install from zip file. Browse to the folder where you saved the file. Select the file you just downloaded and hit Enter.
  3. Restart XBMC to make it aware of the new unofficial XBMC repository.
  4. Again, go to System >> Add-ons and use the XBMC Addons Manager to browse and install the XBMC plugins you want.
