As some of you may know, XBMC Weather uses an online provider to get the info. Unfortunately, a recent third-party API change rendered XBMC Weather useless. This isn’t a problem for the upcoming XBMC Eden 11.0 but, it is a huge problem for the one year old XBMC Dharma. The problem lies in the way the weather is coded: XBMC weather application is part of the XBMC core. See the problem? In order to cope with the changes, team XBMC must release a new XBMC Dharma version. If it sounds simple, it isn’t. Team XBMC is busy coding the next XBMC release, XBMC Eden 11.0, not correcting code to deal with third-party API changes. Plus there’s the problem of users downloading a new XBMC Dharma release, updating their systems and all the fuss that comes along with that (proper backups, some nasty bug sticking is head out and so on). Indeed the problem goes way beyond a simple API change.
The XBMC Weather solution
With millions of XBMC systems deployed around the world, XBMC developers can’t afford this to happen again. Not when XBMC Media Center reputation is at play. Fortunately there’s already a more convenient way to deal with API changes: XBMC addons manager. If an API changes, you release a new version of the XBMC Weather addon. Simple. XBMC team recognized it was a mistake to maintain weather app in XBMC core and decided to nuke it. Spiff and Amet, two of the XBMC team developers pulled out the weather app from XBMC core and coded a new weather addon for XBMC Eden 11.0. Goes to show you never know what’s going to trigger a new XBMC Eden feature.
The new XBMC Eden weather addon, however, doesn’t solve XBMC Dharma users problem. They still can’t get weather updates. If that’s your case, you might consider updating to a XBMC Eden 11.0 nightly build.
The new XBMC Eden weather addon
If you’re already using a XBMC Eden 11.0 nightly build, and it is newer than November 15, you can install the new weather addon by following these steps:
- Go to addons >> Weather
- Download the World Weather Online addon
- Go to System >> Weather
- Select World Weather Online as the default
- Set your location in Weather Addon settings
As usual, a plethora of XBMC users started developing third-party weather addons for XBMC Eden 11.0, thus extending the weather functionality and allowing the use of more online weather providers. A final note to say that none of your skins are going to break with the new XBMC weather addon. They still think weather is a XBMC core application. Spiff and Amet were extra careful and, after some magic, saved XBMC skinners from extra work. Hurray!
